Familiar like...from home familiar? Those sort of people showed up when we were gone last week, too, but we still had all of our memories of everything that was going on and we were still ourselves. That first trip though...it felt similar. Like Oceanside didn't matter that much, because we were thieves who had pulled off a lot of successful heists and we had a big job to complete. A few of the others last week told me they didn't remember much about this place either while they were gone.
[ oh. yeah, that is pretty easy to pick up on and for a moment he does pause as if he's debating where to take this. he doesn't want to push her too much, but...mmm.
he still doesn't know her as well as some of the others. he acknowledges that. so it feels like a dick move to push her, but he does soften his approach a bit. especially considering her extremely crispy corpse will found. ]
...something that spreads pretty fast, yeah. Were the three of you together at the time?
[ well he hears the unheard message in that and he frowns. ]
...must've been a little scary, actually. [ he will just come out and say it. ] Where did you go after that? Were you able to go somewhere else?
[ when people die, usually they are escorted to the underworld and taken to be seen before a panel of judges to sort them into one of three places. but nico has worked out that their afterlife is different than other people's. nevertheless...ghosts tend to be bound with unfinished business. ]
A mansion. [ he is trying to figure out how she got from the school to a mansion. ] Was the owner of the house there, too? Could you actually communicate with them at all even if they couldn't hear you?
The owner was some old man who didn't seem to notice me at all. But he was doing some creepy research on ghosts. Real tryhard, secret-lab-in-the-basement stuff.
[ as a fellow eccentric researcher, like, she gets it? but she also feels like the most qualified person in the universe to judge this guy's secret lab aesthetics. ]
And I found a portal there, to some messed-up place called the "ghost zone."
[ my ass like "i cannot believe rita, who is scared of ghosts, was sent to the ghost zone." ]
Right, the ghost zone. The zone for ghosts. And...I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess you were the only one who could enter it at first? [ a pause. ] I might've just to get away from that weird guy.
[ thank you, nico, for acknowledging how ridiculous it is. ]
Yeah. It was... like a void with scattered islands that I could float between. And there were other people... and a lot of monsters... and they were all ghosts.
Sounds like home. [ okay which yes it's ridiculous but he does say that unironically because that really does kind of sound like the underworld in a lot of ways. ] Did you have to fight? What kind of people...?
[ okay well sorry to rita but the blank look disappears because it does make some amount of sense. ]
Right. Something to create a paradox to go back and change your fate. Not that it's always as simple as that, and not that fate can always be changed. But if there was a ghost with that power...[ he shakes his head. ] If you were in the ghost zone by yourself, were you able to see what Ryuki and Hanako were doing at all?

[ so why are some of them different...? ]
What was the test for?

I don't know exactly... I mean, how it started. But suddenly, there was fire everywhere.

Everyone died, except for those two.

... The next thing I knew, I was in some guy's mansion, but nobody could see me. Besides those two guys, that is. They couldn't hear me, though.
